In 2014, the Affordable Care Act will take full effect and those who do not currently have health insurance will be obligated under the law to get some. There are some things that you should know when it comes to health insurance and what it does and doesn’t cover. All policies are not the same, but there will be some protections that will flow across the board for everyone. Services offered under the Essential Health Benefits mandate are inclusive of all individuals. They are Emergency services, hospitalization, ambulatory patient services, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance abuse services for any disorder, treatment for behavioral health, prescription drugs, rehab services and devices associated with the services, laboratory services, preventive and wellness care services, chronic disease management, and dental, vision and all pediatric services. This is very important to know as you select a health care provider. Additionally, plans will be classified into four levels – bronze, silver, gold or platinum. If you cannot financially contribute to a health plan, there is also a “catastrophic” plan option.
